Walk into a maker fair today and you might find a teenager teaching a retired electrician how to code a microcontroller, a table full of solarpunk crafters weaving solar panels into fabric art, and a biohacker explaining DIY CRISPR kits to a crowd of genuinely bewildered and completely fascinated parents. This is not the maker fair of 2018. Something cracked open during the pandemic years, and what grew out of it is messier, more colorful, and — by nearly every measure — more alive.
Attendance numbers tell part of the story. Regional maker fairs across the country are reporting turnout figures that outpace anything they saw in the years before COVID. But raw headcount only scratches the surface. The deeper story is about who is showing up, why they're coming, and how the people organizing these events have gotten smarter — and more intentional — about what a maker fair is actually supposed to do for a community.
The Hunger Was Real
Jamila Torres has been organizing the Austin Tinkerfest since 2016. She watched her event go fully virtual in 2020 and hybrid in 2021. When she brought it back in person in 2022, she expected a modest bounce. What she got was a flood.
"We had people crying at the door," she says, only half-joking. "Not because of the exhibits — well, maybe a little because of the exhibits — but because they had genuinely missed being in a room with other people who make things. That sounds dramatic, but I watched it happen."
Torres isn't alone in that observation. Across the country, event organizers describe a kind of pent-up demand that surprised even the most optimistic among them. Two-plus years of Zoom calls and TikTok tutorials had apparently done something interesting: they had lowered the barrier to entry for aspiring makers while simultaneously stoking a deep, physical craving to actually be somewhere doing something with their hands alongside other humans.
A 2023 survey conducted by the Maker Education Initiative found that first-time attendees at maker-focused events had jumped by roughly 34 percent compared to pre-pandemic baselines. More striking: the fastest-growing demographic wasn't kids or college students — it was adults between 35 and 55, many of whom had picked up a new DIY hobby during lockdown and were now desperate to connect with a community around it.
Niche Communities Move to the Main Stage
One of the most visible shifts in the post-pandemic maker fair landscape is the explosion of niche maker communities that have gone from quiet corners of the internet to fully realized presences at live events.
The solarpunk movement — which blends sustainability activism with hands-on fabrication, imagining futures powered by community-built renewable tech — has moved from fringe Tumblr aesthetic to a genuine booth presence at fairs from Portland, Oregon to Durham, North Carolina. Crafters are showing up with hand-sewn garments embedded with flexible solar cells, 3D-printed wind turbines scaled for apartment balconies, and open-source rainwater collection systems printed on cardstock and handed out for free.
Biohackers, once viewed with a mix of fascination and suspicion, are increasingly welcomed participants. Community biology labs like Genspace in Brooklyn and BioCurious in Silicon Valley have been sending representatives to maker fairs for years, but post-pandemic, their booths are drawing bigger, more curious crowds. People who spent two years reading about mRNA vaccines are suddenly a lot more interested in what a PCR machine actually does.
"The pandemic made biology legible to regular people in a way that nothing else has," says Marcus Webb, a community biology educator based in Chicago who runs workshops at maker fairs throughout the Midwest. "Now I show up and people already know what a virus looks like. They want to understand the tools. That's a huge shift."
Fiber arts and textile hacking have also surged, with e-textile makers — people who combine traditional weaving and sewing with conductive thread, LEDs, and programmable microcontrollers — commanding serious floor space at events that used to be dominated almost exclusively by robotics and 3D printing.
Fighting Loneliness by Design
Here's something you might not expect from an event planning conversation: a lot of maker fair organizers are now explicitly talking about loneliness as a problem they're trying to solve.
The U.S. Surgeon General's 2023 advisory on the epidemic of loneliness landed with a thud in a lot of community spaces, and maker fair organizers were paying attention. Several are now designing their events with social connection as a stated goal — not just a happy byproduct.
This looks different depending on the event. Some fairs have introduced structured "open build" sessions where attendees without a project can sit down at a communal table, grab materials, and make something alongside strangers. Others have created "skill swap" zones where you can teach someone something you know in exchange for learning something you don't. A growing number of events are scheduling explicit downtime — lounge areas, food courts designed for lingering, even quiet rooms — to encourage the kind of unhurried conversation that tends to spark real connection.
"We stopped thinking of our event as a showcase and started thinking of it as a gathering," says Devon Park, who organizes a mid-sized maker fair in Columbus, Ohio. "The projects are the excuse. The point is the people."
This philosophy is showing up in the numbers. Post-event surveys at Park's fair show that 61 percent of attendees say they made at least one meaningful new connection at the event — and that figure climbs significantly for attendees who participated in structured social activities versus those who just walked the floor.
The Hybrid Question
For all the enthusiasm about in-person return, the pandemic did leave one lasting structural change: hybrid programming is here to stay, and the fairs doing it well have figured out that it's not about streaming a live feed of your booths.
Successful hybrid maker fair components tend to involve asynchronous participation — project submission portals where remote makers can share their work and get feedback from attendees, live Q&A sessions with featured builders that remote participants can join, and digital maker challenges that run alongside the in-person event and feed into it.
The goal, as Torres in Austin frames it, is to use the online layer to expand the community's geographic footprint without diluting the in-person experience. "We're not trying to replicate the fair on a screen. We're trying to bring people into the community so that eventually they show up in person. The digital piece is a pipeline."
What Comes Next
The post-pandemic maker fair renaissance is still unfolding. Organizers are experimenting, demographics are shifting, and the communities showing up at these events are more varied than they've ever been. What's clear is that the interruption of 2020 didn't kill maker culture — it stress-tested it, and what came back was tougher and more creative.
If you haven't been to a maker fair lately, the one you remember probably doesn't exist anymore. The new version is stranger, louder, and a lot harder to put down your phone for — which, honestly, is exactly the point.
